Noticing Place
Noticing Place
Noticing Place is a two-part workshop built to investigate ways of being with place, focusing on sensory and bodily relationships with locations. Understanding how we are part of nature is crucial if we are to create care for our planet and be well with the change our world is experiencing. Focusing on textures, this workshop invites participants to question their relationships with their local environments through mapping, drawing, and collecting.
Drawing is a vital technique for paying deep attention to our surroundings. As Thich Nhat Hanh says, ‘The only way to look deeply is to stop whatever we are doing and fully concentrate on what we are observing’. In this workshop, participants will learn creative techniques such as approaches to observational drawing to forge a deeper connection between the self and place. It has been said that the time now is of urgent stillness. This workshop is a chance to engage with place slowly and mindfully.

Harriet Forster (b.2002) is an English-Australian artist based in Glasgow. Finding inspiration from walks and interactions with nature, Harriet uses drawing and photography to study how she experiences her environment. Exploring sensation and texture with mark-making, Harriet aims to invite the audience into a recreated world built from observations. Playing with thoughts of map-making Harriet tells malleable stories regarding how she is inhabiting this planet.
